Almost 2000 Children Killed or Injured During Russia’s Full-Scale War Against Ukraine - UNICEF
May 14, 2024.
On average, two children a day have been killed or injured in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion. This estimate was shared by UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Regina De Dominicis, as reported by Voice of America.
"At least 1,993 children in Ukraine have been killed or injured since the escalation of the war two years ago, an average of two children [injured or killed] every day," the official reported.
She added that these are verified UN figures, and the actual number of victims is likely much higher.
"As with all wars, the irresponsible decisions and actions of adults cost children their lives, depriving them of safety and their future," emphasized De Dominicis.
In addition to physical harm, the war also causes psychological trauma to children and affects their well-being, the UNICEF representative noted. Nearly a million children in Ukraine do not have access to in-person education due to safety threats.
De Dominicis called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, as well as an end to the brutal use of explosive devices in populated areas and attacks on civilian objects and infrastructure, which disproportionately harm children.
"Above all, Ukrainian children need peace," her statement concluded.
